On 21th June 2025, our two sisters Marie Auxiliatrice UWAYEZU and Providence MUKAMUTESI made their final engagement in our Congregation, in the presence of the vice-provincial Sister Jeanne d’Arc UWAYEZU, as well as the sisters of the vice-province, their families and guests. The Eucharistic celebration took place in the parish of Sainte Thérèse de l’Enfant Jésus, in Butare, Rwanda.
After the Eucharistic celebration, we had the prayer before the meal in front of the cake, followed by words of thanks from the professed sisters. This was followed by a traditional ceremony called ‘Gutwikurura’.
In the northern tradition (although it’s not the same throughout the north), this ceremony is performed by the bride’s family with food, drink and hoes to enable the new household to start preparing meals in their home with everything they need. The hoes are offered because they have to go out to cultivate their fields. The bride and groom will no longer eat what comes from the in-laws, but will eat what they prepare themselves. This is done in the manner of the culture of each region.
