A Century of Blessings
In 1925, the nation had gone through the First World War and then came the time of “The Great Change”: Rural America was moving to the city. The “melting pot” had stopped bubbling. Women who had to take the place of the men gone to war were beginning to be emancipated with more and more of them working outside their homes. This is the context in which Helpers arrived in Chicago. Throughout the last 100 years, Helpers had discern where to respond to the constant and rapid changes in Chicago, keeping in mind that we are called to “Help in All Manner of Good.”
In Chicago, Helpers ministered, and in some cases are still ministering in the areas of religious education, parish work, youth ministry, social work, health care, ministry of care, archdiocesan offices, spiritual direction, physiotherapy, chaplaincy, healing touch. Most recently our Helper’s ministries of Casa Esperanza and The Circle are some ways in which we are responding to the needs of women.
We are deeply grateful for all the blessings we have received by walking along side so many great people: family, friends, co-ministers, and collaborators. All of you have been part of our journey. Together “we believe that another world is possible, a world of justice and peace, a world reconciled, a more human world where light has meaning for each one and where creation is cared for and protected.” (General Chapter 2002)
