Empowering women through tailoring

My name is Marsa. I live in Bolpur in India.

One of my greatest joys in my mission is offering tailoring courses to housewives and young girls in four villages around Bolpur. These women host classes in their homes, where they gather to learn and work together. We’ve provided sewing machines—some donated by kind supporters—and I travel to each village to teach. Some women now earn by making and selling clothes, and I guide them to local markets to sell their creations.

Most of these women come from farming families, where income is seasonal and uncertain. Through tailoring, they gain skills that help them become financially self-sufficient and support their children’s education. Seeing their progress brings me immense joy. When they create something new or invite me to celebrate their achievements, I feel deeply fulfilled.

There are moments when I feel disappointed—especially when the women delay their work or lose motivation. But I remind myself to be patient and understanding. I’ve learned to walk with them, not ahead of them. I counsel myself and them, knowing that growth takes time. Their struggles are real, and their courage inspires me to keep going.

One unforgettable moment was when we visited a village and were welcomed with songs, dance, and music. The women had prepared a small cultural program for us. I was overwhelmed with happiness—it was a beautiful reminder of how far they’ve come and how deeply they value our presence. This year, I’ve been especially moved by the Gospel passage from Matthew 5:14–16: “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

These words have guided me to give my full time and heart to the service of women. We now host tailoring classes in our community four days a week, with 22 women attending regularly. I visit villages in the morning and return for afternoon sessions, balancing both outreach and in-house training.

The women juggle housework, childcare, and field labour. My mission is to offer them a path to empowerment. By sharing their lives, visiting their families, and helping them find work, I’ve seen trust and faith grow among us. Their joy becomes my strength, and their courage inspires me to give even more.
